Linguist Yoad Winter took a completely different approach when he completed a ten-year research project. Instead of writing a book, he collaborated with Sjors Swierstra to create the music documentary Doudou – The Magic of the Rhythm, a lively tribute to Doudou Ndiaye Rose, the legendary Senegalese composer and master drummer.
During this special screening, Yoad will give a special introduction about his work and this film, and he and Sjors will be guests for a Q&A after the film. The conversation will be moderated by Senegalese-Dutch creative Khady Postma, who also served as the translator for the film.
Description
This short film brings Ndiaye Rose’s profound influence on music and culture to life with enchanting performances, personal reflections from family members, and interviews with icons such as Peter Gabriel and Youssou Ndour. Nine years after his death, his family embarks on a spiritual pilgrimage from bustling Dakar to the provincial town of Tivaouane. In the village square, they join other prominent musical families in paying a powerful tribute to the grand master: a celebration of rhythm and dance in which Senegalese percussionist dynasties come together to celebrate his musical legacy. The film has been selected for the Fine Arts Film Festival in Venice, CA.
